DACULA - Consistency wasn't easy to accomplish for the participants in the Region 8-AAAAA boys golf tournament with a constant wind blowing and even stronger gusts throughout Tuesday.
Yet Brookwood couldn't have gotten a more consistent round as every Bronco golfer posted a score in the low 80s to help their team run away with the team title by 13 strokes. The victors shot 330 at a blustery Trophy Club of Apalachee.
Just how consistent were the Broncos?
All six individuals finished within two strokes of each other. Robert Graham and Taylor Walker each carded an 82, Kyle Guidry, Gary Patsy and Jak Kroll each finished at 83 and John Hall shot 84 to give Brookwood its second region championship in the last three seasons and its fourth title overall.
"You're talking about six players going out and playing well," said Brookwood coach Steve Thompson, who will be taking the Broncos to the Class AAAAA state tournament in Jekyll Island for the fourth straight season. "For the lower part of the lineup to be so consistent, it's phenomenal for them. ... And after getting edged out on the last hole (by Grayson) last year, this is really good."
The race that came down to the final hole this year was the one for the tournament runner-up and the second region bid to the state tournament, and it was not without controversy.
A two-stroke penalty was assessed to Dacula's T.J. Shingleton after his scorecard was turned in and signed, turning what had been an 84 into an 86.
The two added strokes allowed Grayson to vault past the Falcons and into second place by a single stroke and sent the Rams to the state tournament for the second straight year.
The penalty was assessed by a committee of region coaches instead of disqualifying Shingleton altogether over a rules violation involving an embedded ball played by Shingleton on the 11th hole. The situation was not reported until after the scorecards were turned in and signed.
The decision was handed down before the two teams' scores were added up and the outcome determined.
"A committee of coaches determined under USGA rules," Dacula coach and tournament director John Williams said. "They had a choice between a two-stroke penalty or disqualification, and the coaches voted to give the penalty. We didn't want to know if (the two-stroke penalty) was going to have an effect on the outcome (beforehand). It turns out it did."
It was a tough break for the Falcons, who also got solid rounds from James McMillan (82), Tyler Roberts (87) and Tate Gardner (89) to finish at 344.
"(The players) fought very hard," Williams said. "But the main thing is, we told them in the end, they maintained their integrity."
